Safety Technician - Spring Outage
Description
This position is for the upcoming Spring outage in April.
Candidate will assist in maintaining a safety culture within the company to eliminate injuries, reduce worker's compensation costs, improve safety performance and awareness, and sustain compliance with OSHA and MSHA regulations.
Responsibilities
- Must Follow ALL OSHA, company, and job site safety rules
- Must be able to provide technical assistance and coaching to employees
- Ensure personnel wear required safety equipment
- Educate and correct PPE infractions
- Perform hand and power tool inspections
- Assure safe working environment on mill property by conducting weekly safety and housekeeping audits
- Perform constant observation of surroundings to identify hazards and mitigate those hazards
- Provide support during ES&H audits and assessments
- Assure JSA's are performed and follow company and OSHA standards
- Audit, track, and organize Job Safety Analysis (JSA)
- Perform and submit all safety audits on assigned maintenance tasks during mill operations, shutdowns and outages to Safety/HR Manager
- Inspect confined space/hot work permits and work site compliance
- Manage and conduct all aspects of "Toolbox Talks" for crews
- Create lessons learned and best practices with construction team
- Backup for evacuation checklist
- Participate in all incident investigations
- Issue equipment as needed
- Assist with training and orientation
- Assist with any safety concerns as needed
- Alert Safety Manager and/or Safety Coordinator of any dangerous conditions
- Perform calibration of equipment and inventory used in conducting air monitoring
- Perform fit test for respirators and gas monitoring
- Educate personnel on the use of fire extinguishers and hot work procedures
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in a safety related field preferred and/or minimum of 3-5 years of construction field safety experience
- OSHA 30 certification
- Technical knowledge and competencies appropriate to position such as ES&H Policy, work planning, and hazard identification and control
- Must have well developed analytical skills
- Experience in establishing and monitoring performance goals, targets, objectives and milestones
- Experience in planning and conducting investigations, assessments, and casual analyses that lead to effective and efficient solutions
- Must be detail oriented
- Ability to prioritize when presented with multiple tasks
- Competent person training in Scaffolding, Fall Protection, Trenching, Confined Space, and/or Mobile Equipment is a plus
- Bilingual proficiency in English Spanish translation is a plus

- Must have excellent communication skills (verbally and written), organization skills and ability to function within a project team
- Must be able to work after hours and weekends if needed
- Must be able to work in all types of environments, including inclement weather
- Must be able to work at elevated heights
- Must be able to climb multiple flights of stairs and occasional ladders
- Must be able to walk and stand for periods of time
- Must be able to lift and carry 50lbs
